Why ‘Psycho’ On Blu-ray Excites Me

Psycho 50th Anniversary Edition - Title TreatmentI don’t have a Blu-ray player. I never really get all geeked up over differences in “beautiful” dimensions or sound mixes. But for some reason, Universal’s announcement this morning that Psycho will come to Blu-ray on October 19, 2010 in a release titled the Psycho 50th Anniversary Edition, excited me. The restored, hi-def version has also been chosen as a Cannes Classic Selection at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Now, my TV isn’t the greatest, and my speakers even worse, but hearing “perfect digital picture and the purest DTS HD 5.1 digital sound” in the same breadth as Hitchcock’s Psycho makes me kick my feet. This is what this technology should be used for. (more…)

In the fall of 1973, Alfred Hitchcock sat down with Tom Snyder on the Tomorrow Show and gave a rare, one-hour length interview. In the years since the interview, the footage (according to the clip’s description), was widely thought to be lost or destroyed. But instead, “the VHS (SP) tape itself was found to be in excellent condition. While properly stored in a climate controlled environment it apparrently had not been played in decades. Great care has been taken to make the digital transfer.”

The interview reminds us of the personality behind Hitchcock (reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock Presents…), instead of “just” the director of classics likeĀ Psycho. It begins with his answering a question of what terrifies him, “”Most things. I’m scared of policemen. I never drive a car, on the theory that if you don’t drive a car you can’t get a ticket….” (more…)
