Review: ‘Hatchet 2′ and Adam Green Q&A

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Hatchet 2 PosterHatchet II is, in many ways, an extremely satisfying movie for the horror fan. Nothing quite nourishes the soul of a gorehound like seeing a man strangled by his own guts, heads grinded into bloody pulps by belt sanders, and unsuspecting hunters bisected from balls to brains by a chainsaw. Still, perhaps the most fulfilling aspect of the film is its very existence, a small, quiet victory, not just for horror, but for independent cinema of all shapes, sizes and proclivities. (more…)

Bitter Broken Brain Reviews ‘Nightmare House Vol. 1′

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Fewdio's Nightmare House Vol. 1There ARE still scares out there. I repeat… there ARE still scares out there. And they are not coming from where you think they are.

You, the jaded horror fan, YES you. I am talking to you. The one who is convinced that you have seen it all. And YOU the one who turns up his nose at all of the studios and their remakes. And HEY- I’m not forgetting you- person who dismisses all direct to video horror as, “Well, if it wasn’t good enough for the theaters, then who cares about it.” I say this to you as I am one of you. And I very, very rarely get freaked. Most of my enjoyment at this stage of the game comes from introducing movies to my unknowing friends and living through THEIR fear and scares the same way I used to. (more…)

Review: ‘Living Dead’, a short film by Brad Case

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

livingdeadI was given this twisted little gem by one of the stars, Greg fuller, who is a friend and is part of the Cinema Wasteland Family. It deals with a woman, Amy, who lives a life of total abuse at the hands of her husband (Greg).

After meeting with a lover, she is found out and brutally beaten by her husband. On top of the physical abuse, he verbally rapes her as well. Julia Johnson, as Amy, sucks it up but you just know she is on the edge and ready to go off it. (more…)

Why I No Longer Hope For The End Of The World, ‘The Road’ Review

Monday, January 25th, 2010

The RoadJust this month, The Book of Eli promised us that even if there’s only one Bible left in the world, you’ll be able to find an iPod if you persevere hard enough. And traditionally every post-societal-breakdown movie from Mad Max to Doomsday promises that even if markets and ATMs are a thing of the past, you can still have face paint and killer fashion sense. Even Waterworld assured us that even if Earth’s submerged under water and we’re all living in boats, you can still come across a stray tomato plant every now and then. (more…)

‘Daybreakers’ Review

Ethan Hawke in Daybreakers

Ethan Hawke in Daybreakers

Daybreakers throws us into the year 2019, with an opening credit sequence littered with signs like, “School Zone 2AM – 3AM” and toothpaste ads for fangs. With all that pastiche out of the way, the movie then really settles into its groove of presenting a “believable” futuristic world, where a vampire virus has taken over all but a small handful of humans. The remaining humans are suspended and subsequently drained, by the civilized, dapperly dressed vamps. Blood is on the verge of running out, however, and that’s where the conflict arises. (more…)

‘Sherlock Holmes’ Review

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

Sherlock HolmesSherlock Holmes is a movie well cast, well acted, well designed, well directed, that somehow, at the end of the day, left me feeling underwhelmed. (And left the person in front of me fallen asleep in her chair.) It’s like this gorgeous house, decorated to hopes of perfection, with just not terribly sound architectural plans. In movie-speak, the plans of course being the storyline. (more…)

‘Until The Light Takes Us’ Review

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Until the Light Takes UsIn the early 90’s, Norway experienced the sort of antics middle-America feared for years, but never actually experienced – a bunch of long haired youth, dressed in black, branding face paint, guitars and the power of metal, burned churches to the ground. With a violence that transcended arson, band members committed suicide and murder. They were the boogeymen personified. But what motivated them and their music? Who were the actual people involved? In Until the Light Takes Us, filmmakers Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell packed up their lives and moved to Norway to find the truth behind the scene. How they present their findings is the polarizer of enjoyment to their documentary. (more…)

‘House of the Devil’ Review

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

House of the DevilHouse of the Devil succeeded in making me now care about director Ti West, indefinitely, for the rest of his career. Previously, all I knew about the man was his high-profile complaints that his version of Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever was cut and hacked so it was no longer recognizable as his original, “John Waters” style edit. I scoffed at what I wrote off as pretentiousness, but after seeing what he accomplished with House of the Devil, I have no choice but to hold him at his word.  House of the Devil proves that West’s grip on atmosphere, mood, and style are impeccable.
