The band Dead Man’s Bones, who has just released their debut album, has a lot going for it, and a lot working against it. One of the main aspects that could fall under both categories that must be discussed off the bat is that it is the pet project of actor, Oscar nominee and professional heartthrob Ryan Gosling. Yes, the dude from The Notebook.
Apparently, unsatisfied by movie star good-looks, millions of dollars, six pack abs, and throngs of adoring young girls who melt when they see his well-trimmed, non-threatening facial hair, Gosling decided to get together with friend Zach Shields and the Silverlake Conservatory of Music Children’s Choir and toss off an album’s worth of spooky songs seemingly inspired by Tom Waits and the soundtrack of Disney’s Haunted Mansion. Aaron (Henry Thomas) is a writer who can’t get much written because of his noisy neighbors. When the girl next door, Linda (Kelli Garner) leaves to do her laundry, Aaron follows her to the laundry mat to strike up a conversation. Their respective jerky and harsh attitudes make them butt heads, but it also draws them together.
While they wait, Aaron creates a horror tale about Linda and her friends. Linda was supposed to be at a birthday party with her friends in a cabin in the woods, but her controlling boyfriend wouldn’t allow her to attend. With information and suggestions from Linda, Aaron builds a story about a killer, with bunny ears, a jumpsuit and a pink tool belt, that is brutally attacking her friends. But, is it really just a story? (more…)

Deep Throat and The Devil In Miss Jones were the two films that that thrust porn into mainstream America. They were called Porno Chic. A lot of books have been written about that era and Deep Throat in particular. But there has never been a book like this.
Georgina Spelvin wasn’t your typical porn actress. She was a little older than most and had done only one film, High Priestess of Sexual Witchcraft, before applying for the catering job on The Devil in Miss Jones. After reading a few lines with the actor, who was to play the Devil’s front man, Gerard Damiano asked her if she would take the role of the lead character, Justine Jones.

Dark Woods opens by quoting Dante. It’s fitting, of course. No comedy is as bleak as The Divine Comedy. And Dark Woods is about as bleak as they come – in all the right ways. Directed by Michael Escobedo and written by (and starring) John Muscarnero, Dark Woods is the type of psychological thriller you sit through hundreds of art-house movies, searching for the one worth your time. This is one of those. (more…)

It was the summer of ‘72, a hot night on the “Deuce.” Time to grab a bottle or two of Bali Hai and find a nice, air conditioned theater to drink it in. The Rialto was showing these two films, so I figured I’d duck in there to get out of this miserable heat. A double bill of animals on the rampage: rabbits and rattlesnakes. How could you go wrong? Cinema Wasteland’s Fall Expo screened Basement Jack last weekend, and the fans just loved it. In all honesty, Basement Jack makes Rob Zombie’s Michael Myers look like a pussy in comparison. This is what Halloween should have been. It’s an unrelentingly brutal viewing experience. (more…)

 Sold Out at the Coolidge
Last night’s midnight screening of Paranormal Activity, at the Coolidge in Boston, reinforced a few key points for me.
- Keep your feet tight and secure under your blanket, and definitely not dangling off the bed.
- Don’t sleep with your bedroom door open. It just leaves more things open to be afraid of.
- If someone personally gives you the number of a demonologist, you should probably take them seriously.
- Paranormal Activity is as scary as we’ve all been told. (more…)

The real star of "Jennifer's Body"
When I first saw Juno, my eyes rolled around so hard in my head I thought they’d shootout my body. The pacing was boring and slow, the character world and speak was ridiculous, and the references to Argento and company seemed sacrilage. But what did I know? Juno won the best script at the Oscars. Now, at the end of Jennifer’s Body’s opening weekend, all the criticism I listed above for Juno is suddenly being applied to JB. And I disagree. (more…)
