Doomsday Clock Update: 1 Minute Closer

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

doomsdayclockRight now CNN is livestreaming an update from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) on the state of the Doomsday Clock. The clock has been in effect since 1947. Last year the BAS rolled the clock back a minute, to six minutes til midnight. Today, January 10, it got pushed forward to five minutes from the destruction of humanity.

The gist of the announcement was about how last year they felt hopeful that, after we reached favorable nuclear agreements between the U.S. and Russia, that we were closer to going in a positive direction that didn’t end in the end of days. Today, we’re being chastised for “not thinking.” (more…)

19-Year-Old Punkass Breaks Into Woman’s Home, Claims to Be 500-Year-Old Vampire

This is what a 500-year-old vampire looks like

This is what a 500-year-old vampire looks like

Saturday night, a 19-year-old D-bag was arrested in Galveston, Texas after he broke into a lady’s house and bit her neck. When the woman got away and called the police, the Vampire Dude – Lyle Monroe Bensley – told police he had to be restrained. Because he was a 500-year-old vampire who needed to feed.

My mind just goes right to Nicolas Cage running down the street, wailing, “I’m a vampire… I’m a vampire!” (more…)

Science Legitimizes SciFi: NASA Has Proof of Space-Time Vortex

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

Holy Shit! A Space-Time Vortex!NASA announced today something that geeks have pontificated over and screenwriters have mused upon for quite some time: the existence of a space-time vortex around earth. The impetus behind their experiment, Gravity Probe B (GPB), goes back to Einstein, and ye ol’ theory of relativity. NASA breaks it down as:

Time and space, according to Einstein’s theories of relativity, are woven together, forming a four-dimensional fabric called “space-time.” The mass of Earth dimples this fabric, much like a heavy person sitting in the middle of a trampoline. Gravity, says Einstein, is simply the motion of objects following the curvaceous lines of the dimple.

If Earth were stationary, that would be the end of the story. But Earth is not stationary. Our planet spins, and the spin should twist the dimple, slightly, pulling it around into a 4-dimensional swirl. This is what GP-B went to space in 2004 to check.

In other words: Holy shit,  Space-Time Vortexes are real! The TARDIS in “Dr. Who” is now free to travel time, and Will Ferrell and Danny McBride are now free to get sucked into one so they can fight dinosaurs! And people want to CUT funding to NASA when they pull out stuff like this?

Sci-fi Come True: Check Out the World’s First Face Transplant

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Oscar - Image by Josep Lago/Getty ImagesOn Monday, the owner of the world’s face transplant showed his new mug on TV and to the public for the first time. The 31 year-old Spanish dude – known only as Oscar – needed his new face after he accidentally shot himself. NPR describes the 24 hour procedure he went under as going something like this: “doctors lifted an entire face, including jaw, nose, cheekbones, muscles, teeth and eyelids, and placed it masklike onto the man.” In his TV interview, Oscar made sure to thank his face donor’s family. Nerd? Or Murderer?

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

Bill Gates, back in '77Quizzes like this take me right back to the internet of the 90s, but then remind me how far they’ve come… with their flashy, flash interfaces. In the spirit of killing five minutes, one website game now asks: Can you tell the difference between a computer programmer and a serial killer? Find out.

One could make the argument that maybe had some of these serial killers lived in a different time, they too could’ve lived discreet lives as furious programmers. Check out Bill Gates back in ‘77.  Clearly he was one acid trip away from talking to his dog and going on a spree. Or maybe we can compare him to someone else. (more…)

Summer Museum Exhibits: ‘Mummies of the World’ and ‘Fantastical Worlds of Ray Harryhausen’

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Ray HarryhausenEarlier today we told you what’s good about being in Rhode Island this summer – here’s (among the many envious things) some cool crap that’s opening up in California galleries this summer. Honestly, it’s the season to travel and if you happen to end up in La La Land, both of these get our vote. And they both take place in galleries. So you might actually learn something.

Behold: Mummies of the World (opens at the California Science Center, July 1) and The Fantastical Worlds of Ray Harryhausen (now through August 22, at the Academy’s Fourth Floor Gallery). So what makes these two things awesome? (more…)

Amityville Horror House Now For Sale

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Amityville Horror House - 2010When the listing for 112 Ocean Ave in Amityville, New York came on to the market recently, it boasted its status as a “legendary” Amityville home, built in 1927, of Dutch Colonial style. It has 5 bedrooms. 3.5 bathrooms. River views. And a cool $1.15 million price tag. What it doesn’t say is, if history and movies have taught us anything, there’s a good chance proprietors will grow a giant beard and try to ax murder their family. (more…)

Japan Attacked By Giant Crab! Well…Not Really

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Monster CrabDon’t take this the wrong way but I think Japan is getting a little greedy by cornering the market on ALL the giant monsters!  It seems this past week a post appeared showcasing this giant crab which was aptly named “Crabzilla”.  Evidently it can live about 100 years and grow to be about 15 feet wide.

I can so see a movie about a swarm of giant crabs attacking Tokyo or even San Francisco’s Golden Gate!  Take a peek at the Japanese Spider Crab here at WeirdAsiaNews.com
