Friday, February 19th, 2010

Devil's Playground: Star Warz BurlesqueA scant three weeks ago, the ladies of burlesque theater troupe the Devil’s Playground went viral with their out-of-this-world interpretation of the George Lucas universe.  Sure, you get the expected Princess Leia in slave costume, but things really start getting interesting (read: confusing and arousing) when a sexy C-3PO and Jabba the Hutt take the stage. If you’re in the Los Angeles area, you can catch a live encore of the act Friday, March 12th at the Music Box @ Fonda. (Get tickets.)

If not, check out the video of their January 9th performance at the Bordello Bar, after the jump.  (more…)

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Were prawns harmed during the making of District 9?

Were prawns harmed during the making of District 9?

What a complete drag it is to report this. So, those of us who stick around to the end credits are used to seeing the American Humane Association’s stamp of approval for any film featuring animals: “No animals were harmed during the making of this film.” But American Human (the only organization who can sign-off on animal welfare in films) has a pretty big bone to pick with the Oscar-nominated District 9: they were never on-set for filming, and never issued use of the end-credit. To retaliate, American Humane is currently urging the Academy to cast their votes for the other films nominated for Best Feature. (more…)

Kitsch, murder, and Sci-fi.For writers, movie-makers, bloggers, and lovers of surreal photography manipulations, check out these images from the portfolio of the Paris based, Marc Da Cunha Lopes, for a touch of late night inspiration.

Especially recommended are the nautically, Lovecraftian album HPL and Primary Bug, which is reminiscent of a slickly done B-movie.

Da Cunha Lopes comes from an advertising background.

Four New Clips: ‘Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Tucker & Dale vs. EvilAfter Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’s Sundance premiere this January, reviewers commended the horror-comedy for being just as clever as the original trailer promised. (The story follows two harmless rednecks on vacation, who get mistaken as murderous rednecks by a group of college kids. Read Cinematical or Film School Rejects reviews.) More will get a chance to check the movie out in March, as part of SXSW’s midnight line-up. But for the majority of us who can’t make the trek to Austin, we’ve got four new clips to give us a taste of some hillbilly humor.
