When I first saw the ad for Starz Spartacus Blood and Sand I pretty much new I would love it. I was right. The show is absolutely everything you could want in a Gladiator cable series: Sex, Violence and stunning costumes and visuals. Oh and a cast of characters you grow to love and hate.

Anthony Hopkins, Getting His Oscar For Hannibal Lecter
It makes us all feel a little righteous as fans when genre fair like District 9, and Tarantno’s Inglorious Basterds get dubbed the best of the best, with Best Pictures nominations.
But what are their odds of winning? Who’s been nominated before, and who’s actually pulled off the win? Check out this awesomely comprehensive genre list, starting with 1932’s Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde win, going through 2008’s Sweeney Todd win. Read it.

“We’re snatchin’ the Pope.” In 1975, cameras rolled on Gone With The Pope, starring Duke Mitchell. But when Duke died, so did any chances of completing the B-movie follow up to Massacre Mafia Style. Now, thirty five years later, film editor Bob Murawski (an editor who’s creds include Drag Me To Hell) has put the final touches on the uncompleted movie, and it’s getting its night in the spotlight on March 12, at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. Ever since promo started for Universal’s Repo Men, a lot have been scratching their heads and thinking, “What the eff?” (Watch the Repo Men trailer.) Is it a remake of REPO! The Genetic Opera? Is it a rip-off? Who ripped off who? REPO! director Darren Lynn Bousman has finally broken silence, and posted a huge treatise on his website, going through the full history of REPO!’s creation, and how it compares to the filming of Repo Men and the book Repossession Mambo.
The bottom line of the argument? Bousman casts no stones, but wants everyone to be very clear that REPO! has been in the public realm since ‘99. As for the others? Read all about it.

Since March 15, 1987, Lovecraft enthusiasts have gathered together to celebrate the tentacled life of H.P. Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937), in his home of Providence, Rhode Island. The tradition continues this year on Sunday, March 14, at the Ladd Observatory. (Read about Lovecraft’s relationship with the Observatory.) Historian Christian Henry Tobler hosts the event, from 3:00-4:00PM. Afterwards, all are invited to sojourn over to Swan Point Cemetery and visit Lovecraft’s gravesite. And yes… Gothic attire is encouraged. Visit the event’s Facebook for more info.
If you’re not familiar with all of Lovecraft’s Providence ties, check out this brief, entertaining YouTube documentary, made by four friends who came up to our home state just to check out the haunts. (more…)

More proof that zombies equal dollar signs* comes from the camp at PopCap: their game, Plants vs. Zombies, has become iPhone’s fastest selling product – ever. In the nine days since its debut on the iPhone platform, the battlefield between vegetation and the undead, has sold over 300,000 units. Or, in cents and dollars, over 1 million.
Not having a chance to check out the game myself, I can only trust the masses opinion that there’s something special about it. And then of course… there’s this officially sanctioned Plants vs. Zombies music video. Which features lyrics like… (more…)
