The bassist of Danzig and Samhain, the original and unofficial photographer for the Misfits – Eerie Von has seen a lot. Lucky for us, he has the photos to back up his journeys through the annals of punk and metal, and they’ve now been published in Eerie’s new book Misery Obscura, released yesterday through Dark Horse. His photos span from 1981-2006, and are supplemented with plenty of road warrior stories. With so much speculation on a band like the Misfits – thinking of what they are today, compared to the good ol’ days – Misery Obscura is pretty much the perfect visual supplement to document what made the Misfits legendary. In the early 90’s, Norway experienced the sort of antics middle-America feared for years, but never actually experienced – a bunch of long haired youth, dressed in black, branding face paint, guitars and the power of metal, burned churches to the ground. With a violence that transcended arson, band members committed suicide and murder. They were the boogeymen personified. But what motivated them and their music? Who were the actual people involved? In Until the Light Takes Us, filmmakers Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell packed up their lives and moved to Norway to find the truth behind the scene. How they present their findings is the polarizer of enjoyment to their documentary. (more…)

Last night, SCARS had the ass-kicking intelligence to head up to Boston’s House of Blues for the Hellbilly Deluxe 2 Tour, headlined by Rob Zombie and supported by Necromantix and (”straight from Halloween 2!”) Captain Clegg & the Night Creatures.
This was probably the fifth or sixth time I’ve seen Zombie, and can say (honestly, without fangirl blinders) that this is the best he’s sounded in a long time, and John 5 and Piggy D were also totally stellar. Having the billy bands on as openers seemed a smart move to me, because it made RZ sound even heavier by comparison and brought a different sort of energy, unlike when he’s brought out lesser metal bands as openers. Check out the Rob Zombie Boston setlist (and highlights) after the jump – it’s been pretty consistent each night of the tour. (more…)

It’s been fourteen years since Nitzer Ebb put out their last full length album. Yet, the industrial band’s been churning and grinding since the 80’s, producing songs still played in goth clubs even today. Horror fans have gotten a couple new tracks over the years on the Saw IV (”Payroll (John O Mix)”) and Saw VI (”Never Known”) soundtracks, and next year the band will finally release their new album Industrial Complex. Until then, Nitzer Ebb is spending December doing a quick US tour, to warm up before they hit the road with Depeche Mode next year. Tough life! The tour opens locally, at the Paradise in Boston, December 3rd. (more…)

Somewhere out there in the world, Jerry Only tours under the guise of the Misfits. The strangest part of this whole affair is almost every other band that exists, which covers Misfits songs, can now be said as playing these songs better than the actual “Misfits” do.
My new favorite example of this comes in the form of Ted Leo, from the occasionally Rhode Island based Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. On Halloween night, Ted gathered up friends from his own band, along with Atom & His Package and Paint It Black musicians, and put together a one-night-only Misfits cover band. Who would have guessed the vegan indie rocker could channel the power of Danzig so convincingly? See for yourself after the jump. (more…)
