Scientists Working On Zombie Injection

Zombie Soldier - Art by Anderpeich (http://anderpeich.deviantart.com/)The mad scientists at DARPA (the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency, part of the Department of Defense) have been watching one too many movies. Or maybe not enough, or they would realize the Planet Terror like implications their latest project could have. According to Wired, DARPA is currently searching for a solution to the biggest cause of death in our battle fields – loss of blood before help can arrive. Their solution, in short? To develop an injection carried by soldiers, which will put them into a state of hibernation, thereby slowing down their odds of bleeding to death on the field. (Picture like the elixir downed by Juliet.)

Wired’s article describes it further, saying, “a single injection will minimize metabolic needs, de-animating injured troops by shutting down brain and heart function. Once treatment can be carried out, they’ll be ‘re-animated’ and — hopefully — as good as new.”

And if they can’t be re-animated? All those cliches of our shell shocked soldiers returning from war “like zombies” might become a tad bit more literal. DARPA’s current plans are to do tests on pigs. We’ll see how this goes!
